Message from the Head of School
Mission
Montrose
is an independent college preparatory day school for girls grades 6-12
with a distinctively Catholic ethos.
Montrose’s
mission is to educate the whole person. Built upon the foundation
of a rich liberal arts curriculum, personal character formation, and close
collaboration with parents, a Montrose education challenges each student
to cultivate
• Intellect and character
• Leadership and service
• Faith and reason
Veritas, Caritas, Libertas emblazoned across the school’s shield
draw the ideals of a Montrose education into focus. Together with
parents, Montrose endeavors to help young women pursue the truth in all
they do, love God and others selflessly, and use their freedom well.
History
In
1979 a group of parents and educators with a shared vision of education
founded Montrose School in Brookline, MA. Their goal was to establish
a school that would integrate
• a
traditional liberal arts curriculum
• supportive teacher-student relationships
• solid moral guidance offered in partnership with parents
• the study and practice of the Roman Catholic faith
While they believed that education is the primary responsibility of parents,
they knew parents needed support from professional educators to provide
their daughters with both rich academic content and excellent teaching.
Education
in the Catholic faith is an integral part of a Montrose education. The
parents and educators who founded Montrose asked the Prelature
of Opus Dei if it would provide the school with chaplains to oversee
the religious education curriculum, celebrate Mass, provide the Sacrament
of Reconciliation, and occasionally teach. Montrose has two chaplains
who are priests of Opus Dei. They
are available to serve Catholic and non-Catholic students alike.
Inspiration
The
educational philosophy at Montrose is inspired by the teachings of the
Catholic Church and the vision of St.
Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei. Founded in 1928,
Opus Dei is a personal prelature
of the Catholic Church that helps individuals integrate faith and work—to
find God in their family life, study, profession, and all of their ordinary
responsibilities.
At Montrose, students put this vision into practice by striving to do
ordinary things extraordinarily well—in the classroom, on the athletic
field, or in their community. They learn to respect the dignity
of all persons, to develop a personal relationship with God, and to put
academic excellence at the service of God and others.
