Course Descriptions:

SAT Preparation for Math with Mrs. Susan Leist
With a focus on guided strategies and practice, this one-week workshop helps high school students prepare for the math sections of the SAT.  Class time will focus on reviewing the major content areas of the math SAT: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, logic and data analysis.

SAT Preparation for Verbal Skills & Essay Writing  
with Mrs. Barbara Whitlock
With a focus on guided strategies and practice, this one-week workshop helps high school students prepare for the verbal and essay sections of the SAT.  Class time will be divided between reading comprehension strategies and practice, grammar/punctuation review, vocabulary-building support, and SAT essay writing.

Reading for Mastery 
with Mrs. Barbara Whitlock
This workshop, open to girls in grade 8 and higher, focuses on strengthening reading comprehension skills for high school success.  Students learn strategies for analyzing challenging texts: primary sources for history, science writing, literature, and research sources.  Learning how to discern, decode, annotate, outline and synthesize a variety of reading challenges helps students develop strategies for strengthening reading comprehension in English, History and Science classes.  Students will also learn pre-reading and speed-reading techniques to help them manage high school homework and study demands with greater efficiency.

College Admissions 101 with Mrs. Deborah Zatkowski
This engaging and interactive program for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade girls will introduce students to the many components of the college admission process.  Students will become familiar with a variety of different resources, gain tips for interviewing and completing the application forms and other important elements of the admissions process.  Guest speakers and campus visits are also planned; Tuesday and Thursday will meet longer due to the travel required for the college visits.

Get Ready for Middle School English
with Mrs. Jill Kerr
This is a fun and challenging class designed for rising 5th, 6th and 7th grade students.  Get Ready for Middle School English offers an introduction to English grammar, introduces strategies for reading comprehension, and prepares students for the rigors of middle school writing.  Students will write daily and try their hand at expository, descriptive, narrative and summative forms.  We will discuss specific writing tips and tools, and work together to explore concepts like point of view, tense consistency and following a prompt.  (Lessons will offer options both for students seeking enrichment and those needing remediation.)

Writing & Grammar Success for 8th & 9th Graders with Mrs. Jill Kerr
This session is designed to provide instruction and support in the areas of writing and grammar for rising 8th and 9th grade English students.  Students will receive an overview of English grammar, analyze correct paragraph structure and address common pitfalls in essay writing.  Specific skills covered in this session include considering your audiencecrafting a thesis statement, integrating quotes and writing an effective conclusion.  (This course is designed for students needing remediation)

High School Grammar & Punctuation Review with Mrs. Barbara Whitlock
This workshop for girls entering grades 9 - 12 provides an in-depth review of basic and more advanced English grammar and punctuation.  These skills provide support for English, foreign language and writing success, as well as preparation for SAT and MCAS verbal skills tests.

High School Writing Success with Mrs. Barbara Whitlock
This course is designed for high school students who could use additional support for the analytical writing skills required for upper level high school and college prep success.  Students will review essential elements of expository, persuasive and research-based analytical writing, to help master the art of writing with analytical depth, logical clarity and persuasive effectiveness, while developing a concise and energetic writing style.

Math Made Fun I & II with Mrs. Rachel Sun
Get a jump start on the school year by reviewing math basics: multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, word problems and percentages. Real-world applications of these topics will make comprehension easier and more fun.
August 19 - 23.
For girls entering grades 5 & 6 (Math Made Fun I): 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Algebra Preparation and Review 
with Mrs. Susan Leist
Enter the new school year with confidence, equipped with important skills for high school math. Solve equations and inequalities, graph linear functions, apply the rules of exponents, perform operations with polynomials and explore basic geometry. A fun & interactive way to review important concepts. 
August 19 - 23.

Additional Information
Montrose welcomes girls from any school to all of our summer program courses.

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Class sizes are limited. 

Cost
  • Current and incoming Montrose School students: $150 per class
  • Non-Montrose Students: $200 per class
Students taking both a morning and afternoon class are welcome to bring a lunch and remain on campus between classes in a supervised lunch period in the cafeteria or courtyard.

Faculty

Jill Kerr teaches middle and upper school English at Montrose.  Her background includes teaching English at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in North Carolina and over 15 years of tutoring elementary, middle school, high school and college students in Reading, English and French.  A former professional track athlete, she has coached track and cross country at Wake Forest University and Boston College and uses her coaching skills to help motivate and encourage her students.

Susan Leist
is known for her creativity in teaching math and is the Montrose Math Dept Coordinator.  She has taught math to middle and upper school students at Montrose for 21 years. Prior to Montrose, she taught math at Dana Hall School for 11 years. This is her fifth summer teaching in the Montrose Summer Program. Mrs. Leist is a highly sought after tutor for math and SAT prep, with more than 30 years of tutoring experience.

Rachel Sun
teaches middle school and 9th grade math at Montrose and is the Middle School Coordinator. In addition Rachel tutors both middle and high school students in topics including math and study skills.  This is her 4th summer teaching Math Made Fun at Montrose, and she has taught a similar course in Charleston, SC.  Her  background includes teaching math and language arts to students with language-based learning disabilities at Landmark School.  Mrs. Sun wants her students to realize that math can be fun and it doesn't have to be intimidating.

Barbara Whitlock teaches high school English at Montrose, while serving as the English Department Coordinator. Her background includes teaching history at Middlesex School in Concord and teaching English, History and Journalism at the Academy of Notre Dame, Tyngsboro. In addition, she has developed a comprehensive primary through secondary writing curriculum which she has taught throughout the Boston area and to online students across the globe. Mrs. Whitlock has tutored writing students of all ages and coached students in college essay writing.

Deborah Zatkowski  has spent nearly 30 years in educational administration, including admission positions at Wellesley College, Suffolk University and Quinnipiac University.  She has also served as a consultant for the College Board.  Mrs. Zatkowski joined Montrose as the Director of College Counseling following her work as a school principal.  Her expertise in counseling students specifically in college admissions has been an invaluable asset to our families.  She is also the past-president of the Catholic School Counselors Association and member of the New England Association of College Admission Counselors.
