Gold Award for Senior

Elizabeth Raine ’16 earns Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
Montrose senior Elizabeth Raine ’16 has earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

With the Gold Award, the Girl Scouts recognize girls who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable Take Action projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. The Gold Award requires completion of a seven step process, usually takes between one and two years to complete, and requires several prerequisites. Elizabeth is one of only 10,000 girls nationwide who has earned the award this year.

Elizabeth spent over eighty hours developing a project that centered around the local bat population, using her research to educate others in the community about the benefits of having bats in the area. She built four bat boxes that she installed at Powisset Farm in Dover. Elizabeth taught two sessions of lessons to Medfield elementary school students. Furthermore, she displayed information at the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary Fall Fair in Norfolk as well as at Medfield Day.

“There is a great sense of achievement in this accomplishment,” said Elizabeth.  “I will admit that there were times when I felt like giving up, but I managed to persevere.” Elizabeth’s advisor at Montrose, Lauren Hofer, who is also involved in Girl Scouts as a leader notes, “ Girls who work toward their Gold Award find the process to be a powerful and invaluable learning experience that continues to shape their lives as young adults.”

Elizabeth will be officially presented her award at a March 2016 ceremony.
