Quo Vadis? Seniors Answer

Members of the class of 2016 find success, rewards in college application process.
Each of Montrose's 41 seniors is in the midst of answering the question "Quo vadis?" or, "Where are you going?" with help from College Guidance Counselors Mrs. Sarah Nolan and Mrs. Mary Foley.

Seniors have already earned admission to over 60 of the nation's top educational institutions, including MIT, University of Virginia, Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, Northeastern University and Connecticut College. Collectively, members of the class of 2016 have already garnered over $5.1 million in merit scholarships to date, an average of $124,000 per senior.

“Our college guidance curriculum begins with self-assessments in 9th grade, helping the girls to develop skills such as self-reflection, study skills, time management and effective writing.” said Mrs. Nolan. MaryGrace King ’16 observed, “I found the CLDs [Character Leadership Discussions] that take place regularly at Montrose to be so valuable in helping me to come to understand myself and my strengths and weaknesses.”

From this self-reflection, girls grow to self-direction in 10th grade, as the College Guidance Counselors help them create SMART goals and take savvy risks while testing their interests and strengths.

By grade 11, girls begin to take on new roles, assume leadership positions and broaden their thinking. The time spent with the College Guidance Counselors becomes more focused on the college search. “One of the most helpful meetings I had was the introductory meeting with my college counselor and my advisor,” said Molly Cahill ’16. “It was wonderful having my advisor, someone with whom I have a longstanding relationship, there with me to help my college counselor really understand who I am and what I am looking for in college.”

By senior year, Montrose students have a firm understanding of who they are and where they would best thrive. This information helps put the girls in the driver’s seat as they begin the application process. “The essay writing workshop was extremely helpful,” said Rachel Solomon ’16. “It is terrific that we can set deadlines with College Guidance Counselors, so we can stay on track with our applications.”

“The self-knowledge and confidence that Montrose students display in the application process is noted, and sets them apart,” said Mrs. Nolan. “As an admission counselor from Boston College has said, ‘Whenever I interact with Montrose students, their confidence in and comfort with themselves is readily apparent. Montrose young women know who they are. During the often challenging transition to college, the ability to know who you are and to stay true to yourself is a blessing.’"
