Sailing the Ocean Blue
The Middle School Players wowed audiences with two shows of the classic Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore.
H.M.S. Pinafore, a gentle satire of the English class system, features Ralph Rackstraw (Kate Pioch ‘22) as an able seaman in love with Josephine (Isabella Russo ‘21), daughter of the captain (Anna Sheehan ‘21). The captain, however, will not accept a match for his daughter with a common sailor and plans for her to marry Sir Joseph Porter (Hadleigh Zinsner ‘21). In typical Gilbert & Sullivan fashion, plot twists lead to comedy, silliness and a happy ending.
The show featured rousing performances by Kate, Isabella, Anna and Hadleigh, as well as Bella Flores ‘22 as Bosun, Ava Russo ‘23 as Dick Deadeye, Anna Proscia ‘23 as Hebe and Viviana Niebuhr ‘23 as Little Buttercup. In addition, the ensemble of sailors and ladies provided lively support for the infectious signature songs, such as “We Sail the Ocean Blue,” “The Captain of the Pinafore,” and “He Is an Englishman.”
Colorful costumes, well-timed comic acting and spirited dance numbers all contributed to an animated production that delighted hundreds of attendees.
Congratulations to director Mrs. Holly Sullivan, stage managers Stephanie Ciampa ‘20, Rebecca Gillis ‘19, Katie Hogan ‘20, the set design club, tech crew and instrumentalists for an outstanding show.
