Looking Swell, Dolly!

Big hats, dancing waiters and classic songs enliven joyful production of Hello, Dolly!
The Montrose Players delighted three audiences with this year’s all school musical, Hello, Dolly!

Olivia Hastie ‘18 played the title role, the fast-talking, endlessly enterprising matchmaker Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi. Dolly is a widow who is determined to remarry to the grouchy but rich Horace Vandergelder (Erin Golden ‘17), who in turn is convinced that he should marry Irene Molloy (Nora Clancy ‘18). Complicating matters is his weepy niece Ermengarde (Annie Miklus ‘18), who wants to marry painter Ambrose Kemper (Yvonne Niebuhr ‘18) over Horace’s objections.

When Mrs. Molloy’s assistant Minnie Fay (Caroline Churney ‘19) and Horace’s employees Cornelius Hackl (Victoria Driscoll ‘19) and Barnaby Tucker (Eileen Brennan ‘18) get involved, all the parties end up in the same New York City restaurant. Hijinks ensue, especially when the raucous Ernestina (Emily Nelson ‘20) joins Horace at his dinner table.

The show was enlivened by the dancing waiters, led by Stanley (Alex Condrin ‘18), and the large ensemble scenes for Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Before the Parade Passes By and the signature number, Hello, Dolly.

The vibrant set design and painting by the Art Club, led by Addison Harrison ‘19, and the old-fashioned costumes, effectively conjured the New York of the late nineteenth century.

Congratulations to Mrs. Holly Sullivan and her entire cast and crew on an outstanding production.
