Celebrating Spring with Music

Singers and musicians impress audiences at the Spring Concert.
Spring was in the air for Montrose singers and musicians last week, when parents, families and friends gathered for the annual Spring Concert. Music teacher Mrs. Holly Sullivan greeted the audience at Walpole High School, announcing to cheers that this would be the final off-site concert before the anticipated completion of the Arts & Athletics Center this fall.

Appropriately, the Middle School Chorus began the evening with a selection from the musical The Secret Garden, “Winter’s on the Wing.” Their three additional numbers included lively choreography and multiple part singing, with 8th grade students donning sunglasses to perform “Sh-Boom.”

Euseong Jun ’14 and Yining Wu ’14 provided an extra treat, with a duet rendition of “Send in the Clowns” on flute and piano. The Upper School Handbell Choir followed, performing a foot-tapping “Sway” by Pablo Beltran Ruiz.

Montrose School’s a cappella group, the Treblemakers, delighted the crowd with “Take a Chance,” featuring soloists Molly Cahill ’16 and Caroline Strauss ’14, and “Touch the Sky,” featuring soloist Maggie James ’14. Striking in black with red accents, the group recognized their seven graduating seniors to loud cheers: Clare Chiodini ’14, Maggie Fitzgerald ’14, Olivia Giannakopoulos ’14, Maggie James ’14, Eilis Quinn ’14, Dina Roche ’14 and Caroline Strauss ’14.

The Middle School Tone Chimes rang out a well-rehearsed “Crusader’s Hymn,” followed by the Upper School Chorus, which opened with a lovely, peaceful “Stars I Shall Find.” Next followed “Cantique de Jean Racine,” for which Olivia Aha ’14 and Monica Fernandez del Castillo ’14 read and translated the original French lyrics. The Upper School Chorus closed out the engaging evening with a jazzy version of “Moses,” featuring solos by Catherine Schickel ’14 and Maddie Crump ’15.

Thank you to Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Karen Demirjian for an enjoyable evening of lovely music!
