Mavericks Off and Running

The fall sports season at Montrose kicks off with early successes.
The Montrose School fall sports season has started with some early successes.

The Varsity Cross Country team is now 21 girls strong, the largest team in Montrose history. In last week’s meet at Cambridge School of Weston, the Mavericks dominated the field of top girl finishers. Hannah Marino ’18 placed second of all girl runners from all eight schools, and five Montrosians were in the top ten girl finishers: Hannah, Ciara Young ’18, MaryGrace King ’16, Maillane Werner ’18 and Jensen Radner ’17. “It was wonderful to see all the red uniforms emerge from the woods!” said Athletic Director Jodi Blackburn.

Top runner Katrin O'Grady ’14, team captain, was unable to compete due to a knee injury, yet she traveled with the team, cheered them on and congratulated each member of the team at the finish line. All runners finished strong, including 6th grader Anna Sheehan ’21 in her first race. “Coach Katherine Hepinstall ’10 was well organized and cool as a cucumber as she led the Montrose team in her debut season,” said Mrs. Blackburn.

The Varsity Field Hockey team achieved its own milestone as they notched their first team victory. After an 0-9 season in 2013-2014, the Mavericks rejoiced in the hard-fought 1-0 win over Cambridge School of Weston. “Teamwork won the day for the Mavericks,” said Mrs. Blackburn.

With the start of the season, the Montrose School field hockey team is now part of the New England Preparatory School Athletic League, and will be eligible for post-season play with a qualifying record. As a NEPSAC member, the team was invited to its first ever PlayDay with five other schools. The girls traveled to St. George’s School in Middletown, RI to compete in the all-day tournament, playing 30-minute games with drive and hustle against bigger schools and more established programs. “This is another first for these hard working and talented young women,” said Mrs. Blackburn.

The Montrose Varsity Soccer team won their home opener against rival Waring School last Friday. After Montrose took a 2-0 lead, Waring gained momentum and tied the score at 2-2, and again at 3-3. “The Mavericks worked hard, stayed focused, regained the lead 4-3 and held on strong to win the game,” said Mrs. Blackburn. The win was impressive for a team in a rebuilding year with no seniors.
