Montrose Hosts Irish Team

Student athletes from Belfast enjoy a warm welcome as they visit Montrose.
Montrose hosted a contingent of student athletes and coaches from Bloomfield Collegiate in Belfast, Ireland on October 24.

Montrose students and faculty were on hand to welcome the visitors, 30 members of the Bloomfield Collegiate field hockey team and their four coaches. Bloomfield Collegiate had requested to play a field hockey game at Montrose, but the planned game on Miracle Field was cancelled due to bad weather. Instead, the teams from the two countries visited together, toured Montrose and shared descriptions of their field hockey and school experiences.

Varsity Field Hockey captains Monica Stack ‘15 and Jessica Pink ‘15 welcomed the visitors and led them on a tour of Montrose. The visitors heard the 6th grade students in Holly Sullivan’s music class sing a hymn, and cheered as Emma Schiller ‘17 and Colleen McCarthy ‘16 performed Irish step dancing in the M&M Building. They participated in Bridget Higgins’ physics class, spoke French in French class and listened to a Spanish song in Spanish class. Father Richard Rieman presented the guests with a blessed angel, and they gave a coat of arms plaque to Montrose School

After the tour, the members of Montrose’s Varsity and JV field hockey teams joined the Bloomfield girls as the teams gathered in the A&A to compare notes on the field hockey experience over a pizza snack. The visiting girls watched the Varsity Soccer team play on Miracle Field, cheering for both the Mavericks and the opposing team from Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall.

“Our visitors from Bloomfield Collegiate were overwhelmed by the very warm welcome from the Montrose community,” said Athletic Director Jodi Blackburn, who arranged the visit. “The girls truly did not want to leave Montrose School. They loved the joy here.”
