Maggie Carr '21 wins the annual middle school Geography Bee sponsored by National Geographic.
In the annual middle school Geography Bee, Maggie Carr '21 emerged as the winner after she and eight other contestants competed to answer questions about cities, countries, rivers and more.

Each Montrose middle school student took a written test, provided by the National Geographic Society, to determine who would compete in the live contest. The three top scorers from each grade were Maggie, Amanda Belger '21, Anna Sheehan '21, Isabel Gomez '20, Sarah Ling '20, Grace Lockard '20, Emma Dunnington '19, Becky Gillis '19 and Abby McAvoy '19. The Montrose 6th grade Geography curriculum provides students with a strong background in this subject.

The nine girls took the stage in the Arts & Athletics Center on February 5 for the competition. Acting Head of School Mrs. Katherine Ginnetty explained the instructions and read the increasingly challenging questions to the contestants.

When just two finalists remained, Maggie and Amanda, the competition moved into the Championship Round. For the final question involving the location of the Yukon, Maggie was able to provide the correct answer, Canada, and was declared the winner.

The Geography Bee, hosted by the National Geographic Society for the 27th year, takes place in thousands of schools across the United States.

As the winner of the Montrose Geography Bee, Maggie will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. Up to one hundred of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in the Massachusetts State Bee on March 27.
