A Unique Educational Experience

U.S. History comes alive for 10th grade students in a Montrose tradition, the trip to Washington.
U.S. History came alive for the 10th grade recently, as they partook of a Montrose tradition, the “DC Experience.” The annual sophomore trip to our nation’s capital served as a unique educational experience as well as a wonderful bonding opportunity.

The trip to Washington, DC allowed 10th grade students to combine learning, sightseeing and fun. For five days in the DC area, the girls enhanced their understanding of history through hands-on experiences. The trip’s highlights included the museums of the Smithsonian Institute, the various monuments, Ford’s Theatre and Arlington National Cemetery.

“The DC Experience serves as a complement and capstone to U.S. History I and II, in which we study developing America and its emphasis on opportunity, rights and citizenship,” said History teacher Mrs. Heather McLeod. “The trip allows students a first-hand opportunity to learn more about our nation's capital, as well as how we became a great nation and the actions and experiences that got us to where we are today.”

Each stop at an attraction was unique and educational thanks to the carefully prepared student presentations. Each student researched one of the historical sites or attractions to be visited in advance, created a brochure for her classmates, and gave a presentation during the visit to the site.

“Viewing these museums, monuments and seats of the tripartite system of our government brings history alive in a way that cannot be duplicated by a textbook, or even the most exciting HD movie,” said chaperone Mrs. Lauren Hofer. “Our students are fortunate indeed to have the opportunity to fully experience our capital as the vibrant and historic city that it is.”
