Science Teams Compete at MIT

Montrose’s two upper school teams advance to Silver Round in annual science trivia contest.

Montrose upper school science lovers recently joined top science students from throughout the Boston area at the annual MIT Science Trivia Challenge.

For the first time, Montrose fielded two upper school teams in the contest, the “Montrose Rare Metals” and the “Montrose Natural Selections.” The two teams were the only ones from an all-girls school.

Competitors included team captains Laura Bergemann ’15 and Colleen McCarthy ’16, as well as Katie Sidhu ’16, Brigid Bane ’16, MaryGrace King ’16, Carmen Bolivar ’17, Yvonne Niebuhr ’18, Anneka Ignatius ’18, Gabby Landry ’18 and Elizabeth Ling ’18.  lThe girls traveled to MIT during April vacation week to participate in the Science Trivia Challenge, an annual live team trivia quiz in which contestants are challenged on their knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer science, earth science, inventions, local contributions to science and more.

In the preliminary round, team members worked together to answer questions on a range of science topics. Advancing to the Silver Division Final, the girls faced still more challenging questions.

Although neither Montrose team was one of the grand prize winners, the girls enjoyed the challenge, the teamwork and the camaraderie of an evening shared with other young people interested in science. "We send teams to the MIT Science Trivia Challenge so that our students can experience the exhilaration of interaction with peers who enjoy science and who excel at it," said science teacher Mrs. Lauren Hofer. "Our girls can simultaneously see the MIT campus, meet MIT students and professors, test their knowledge of science broadly against a set of competitive counterparts from other schools, work together as a team, and, most importantly, have fun."
