Science Team Advances at MIT
Two Montrose teams compete in Science Trivia Challenge with one team advancing to Gold Round.
Montrose upper school science lovers recently joined top science students from throughout the Boston area at the annual MIT Science Trivia Challenge.
Competitors included team captains Elizabeth Ling ‘18, Anneka Ignatius ‘18 and Ciara Young ‘18, as well as team members Caroline Churney ‘19, Jessie Wang ‘19, Sofia Conte ‘19, Bella Rinaldi ‘19, Jenna McCarthy ‘19, Sophie Kocho ‘20, Celia Roberto ‘20 and Anna Bachiochi ‘20. The girls traveled to MIT during April vacation week to participate in the Science Trivia Challenge, an annual live team trivia quiz in which contestants are challenged on their knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer science, earth science, inventions, local contributions to science and more.
In the preliminary round, members of the two teams worked together to answer questions on a range of science topics. The first team was one of the highest-scoring teams in the preliminary round and advanced to the Gold Round, where they faced still more challenging questions. MIT posted a photo of the Montrose team competing in the Gold Round on the MIT Instagram account.
While competing, the girls met with Laura Bergemann ’15 MIT ‘19, a volunteer at the event.
"We send teams to the MIT Science Trivia Challenge so that our students can experience the exhilaration of interaction with peers who enjoy science and who excel at it," said science teacher Mrs. Lauren Hofer. "Our girls can simultaneously see the MIT campus, meet MIT students and professors, test their knowledge of science broadly against a set of competitive counterparts from other schools, work together as a team, and have fun."
