Senior Makes Maverick History

Basketball captain Sophie Cronin ‘23 nets 1,000 career points and a Division III bid.
Sophie hit the milestone in a game against Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall on February 1. She is the first Maverick ever to reach 1,000 points in her basketball career.

“I was so unbelievably nervous at the beginning of the game,” said Sophie. “Everyone was ready to celebrate, and even though I only had 5 points left until I reached 1,000, I still thought ‘what if I don’t make it?’ When I finally reached 1,000 points, it was so rewarding. Being in that moment proved to me how supportive Montrose is, almost like a family.”

Sophie will continue to score points next year at the Catholic University of America. She hit another milestone earlier this year when she signed a national letter of intent to play Division III Women’s Basketball with the CUA Cardinals in November. Sophie said, “After playing on my local AU team since 4th grade, I knew as I continued playing in high school that I wanted the chance to end up on a college team one day. Everything added up when I visited CUA. Like Montrose, your team is like your family. I’m so excited to have that support system alongside the opportunity to play in college.”

Sophie joins multiple other Mavericks who are currently competing in college athletics, including:
Gabriella Bachiochi ‘21, DI track at Boston College
Ciara Scamby ‘21, DIII diving at Holy Cross
Colleen Casey ‘22, DI soccer at Providence College
Caroline Piorkowski ‘22, DIII lacrosse and cross country at DIII Gordon College
