Middle school students compete in National Geographic Bee.
Led by geography teacher Ms. Kate Cusack, Montrose middle school students recently participated in the 24th annual National Geographic Bee. “We want to help students learn more about our world, and we thought the Geo Bee would give them a chance to demonstrate their knowledge in an engaging and educational way,” said Ms. Cusack.
The preliminary round of the competition consists of a written test comprised of questions on topics such as U.S. geography, continents, world geography, and cultural geography. The top three scorers in grades 6, 7 and 8 - Alexandra Rider ’18, Elizabeth Ling ’18, Ciara Young ’18, Nellie Adams ’17, Natalie Montalbano ’17, Ariana Jackson ’17, Katie Sidhu ’16, Catherine Conroy ’16, and Emma Frank ’16 – advanced to the final round, which was held on January 10 at Montrose.
For the final round, contestants were seated in a row and answered questions read aloud by moderator, Dean Katherine Ginnetty. English teacher Mrs. Becky Roberts also helped out as timekeeper and judge. Seventh graders Nellie Adams ’17 and Ariana Jackson ’17 advanced to the championship round, and Nellie won by correctly answering the tiebreaker question about Cologne and the Rhineland region.
As Montrose School’s Geographic Bee champion, Nellie Adams will now advance to the next stage of the competition. She will take a written test, and the top scorers across Massachusetts will participate in the state bee on March 30, 2012. The state champions will then advance to the national championship in May. The winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands!
