Surviving the Rwandan Holocaust

Immaculee Ilibagiza, author, Left to Tell

Immaculée Ilibagiza is a living example of faith put into action. Her life was transformed dramatically during the 1994 Rwandan genocide where she and seven other women spent 91 days huddled in the bathroom of a local pastor’s house. She entered the bathroom a vibrant, 115-pound university student with a loving family and emerged weighing 65 pounds to find her family had been brutally murdered. Immaculée credits her salvage to prayer and to a set of rosary beads given to her by her father. Rather than succumb to the rage of her situation, Immaculée turned to prayer. She taught herself English, and secured a job with the United Nations, immigrating to the US in 1998.
