3 Students Win State Writing Awards
Sophie Kocho ‘20, Spandana Vagwala ‘22 and Mary Connolly ‘24 were honored for their entries in the Letters About Literature writing competition.
Letters About Literature is a state-wide writing initiative open to students in Grades 4 through 12. In this program, the students choose a book of their choice and write a letter to the author explaining why the book was meaningful to them.
Sophie, Spanada and Mary each received Honors, putting them in the top 10 in the state in their age category. In previous years, those receiving Honors were invited to a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House.
Sophie read and reflected on the book The Brain That Changes Itself: Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science before writing to author Norman Doidge, MD. 8th grader Mary Connolly wrote to Susan Cain, author of Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverted Kids by Susan Cain. Spandana chose You Bring the Distant Near, writing to author Mital Perkins:
“You Bring the Distant Near authentically represents what kids like me truly are like. We are more than our academic credentials or limited social life -- we are dreamers like Tara, creative thinkers like Anna, Chantal and Sonia; kind and compassionate girls trying to make sense of our place in the world. I am appreciative to have been reminded that after reading your book. I hope for books like these to not only serve as a reminder for me, but for people in every generation and race. Thank you for giving me the mirror I’ve been looking for.”
