Mavericks Wrap Successful Winter Sports Season

Mavericks have wrapped up their winter sports season, and as they prepared to kick off spring team practices beginning March 21, both athletes and their coaches looked back on a memorable and highly successful series of winter achievements.

On the heels of an unprecedented fall sports season, which saw record-high student athlete participation, Montrose winter teams took the baton and made strides toward one win after another.

On Track for Success

In its first year as an official varsity sport, indoor track team members participated in five meets this season, with several athletes reaching personal records. During the final meet at the Billy Brockmueller Invitational, held at Brown University, the three Montrose relay teams finished first for the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800. One athlete, Rosie Beard '25, even qualified for Nike Indoor Nationals this season and placed 5th in the freshman 400m in Staten Island, NY.

“Coaches Jill Kerr and Madeleine Lechner did an incredible job this season,” said Montrose Athletic Director Julie Boynton. With 30 girls taking part in the indoor track program, the team is well-positioned to perform in the 2022-23 season.

Nothing but Net

Varsity basketball went undefeated this season and claimed the IGC Division I championship with a win against Covenant Christian Academy. Leading up to that contest was a strong performance and win against Newton Country Day.

Mrs. Boynton says this group of Mavericks was a unique one. “What stuck out to me about this particular team was how well they bonded both on and off the court. They have a genuine love for each one of their teammates and you could see it both in practices and during games,” she said. Coach Kailyn Aguiar and Coach Kathryn Purinton led the Montrose athletes.

Colleen Casey '22 and Sophie Cronin '23 were named NEPSAC Class C All-Stars this season. Both players also earned IGC All-League honors, along with Kenzie Cassler '24.

JV and Middle School basketball ended their seasons with an intrasquad scrimmage with both teams. “The game was super exciting, and the red team ended up winning by only three points,” Mrs. Boynton said. “It felt incredible to finally have interscholastic competition for all our indoor teams this season,” she continued, referring to Covid-related limitations during the 2021 season.

Mrs. Boynton notes that Maverick coaches play a key role in student athletes’ performance – as competitors and as young women of character. “As mentors, role models, and motivators, coaches play an important role in the lives of our student-athletes. The coaching staff at Montrose lead by example and encourage athletes to become the best version of themselves. They facilitate improvement through encouragement, push athletes out of their comfort zone, and set a good example,” she said. “We would never have the success we have had as an athletic department without their vision, dedication, and hard work over the years. Over the past five years, 22 new coaches have been hired. Currently, 73% of our coaching staff (JV & V) played a sport at the collegiate level.”
