Master Teacher Offers Dante Class

Montrose alumnae, current parents, parents of alumnae, faculty and staff gather to reflect and learn with Mary Jane Rice.
For 29 years, Mary Jane Rice, has taught students the rich verse of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Now, on select Friday mornings this fall, the master teacher of English, philosophy and Latin offers the gift and wisdom of Dante to a variety of women in the greater Montrose community. Several dozen women - including alumnae, current parents, parents of alumnae and current and former members of the faculty and staff - gather in the Deep Work Center with Mary Jane to journey and reflect alongside Dante and Virgil through circles of hell in the Inferno.

Art teacher Christina Marge said, “I was elated when I found out I’d be able to take this class from Mary Jane Rice. I’ve always wanted to learn more about Dante, especially after chaperoning the In the Footsteps of Dante trip to Italy in 2018, and I can think of no better person to learn from than Mary Jane. Sitting in her class was truly a gift.”

The class attendees will gather for future classes in November and December, and hope to continue the journey through the Divine Comedy in Mary Jane’s spring course on the Purgatorio.
