14 champion spellers compete to represent Montrose in the next round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Ellie Fujawa '28 was the Montrose winner, successfully spelling the word "jicarilla." Maria Noronha '28 was the runner-up. The girls had accurately spelled words like “biryani,” “undine,” “cirrhosis,” and “thurible.”

Ellie is now eligible for the qualifying test to participate in the Regional Bee in March. “Being able to compete in the next bee is such an amazing opportunity,” she reflected. “Whenever I spell a difficult word correctly, it’s so satisfying! I am grateful to Mrs. Roberts for all her help.”

Two experienced Spelling Bee veterans served as the judges in the Montrose contest. Sanya Nadeem ‘26 won the statewide bee in 2021, earning the chance to represent Massachusetts at the national Scripps Bee competition. Gabriella Dansereau ‘26 won the Montrose Bee last year and went on to place third at the regional bee.

Gabrielle said, “I felt very supported and encouraged by Montrose last year when I moved on to the later rounds of the spelling bee. Both my mentor, Ms. Rice, and Mrs. Roberts attended the regional bee. Also, Miss Ortiz and Mrs. Roberts helped me study. I was really grateful for this support!” Sanya added, “It was so exciting to be surrounded by other people who enjoyed the same thing I did. I learned so much about words, their roots, definitions, and so much more from being in the bee – things that still continue to help me in my day-to-day life.”
