Historic Success

Montrose School made history again in the annual National History Day competition.
Elena Serieva ‘25 won the state gold medal for her paper on “A Vision for the Future: Harold Ridley’s Invention of the Intraocular Lens.”  Sarah Lange ‘25 also won the gold medal for her paper, “A Mountain of Defiance: The Forgotten Humanitarian Resistance Movement During the Armenian Genocide and Musa Dagh’s Fight for Survival.”

Both Sarah and Elena advanced to the national contest of National History Day at the University of Maryland in June.

“The most compelling aspect of my project was realizing the depth of resilience of the human spirit and people's will to survive,” said Sarah. “Mrs. Forsgard's support and enthusiasm spurred me on. Her oversight and advice were invaluable.”

Each year more than half a million students participate in the National History Day contest. Montrose students have qualified for nationals in five of the last seven years and regularly dominate the state-level competition.
