"Senators" for a day

10/30/2025

Montrose 8th graders became “Senators” for the day on a visit to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston.

The students didn't just learn about government — they put their signature Civics curriculum into action, learning to legislate on critical 21st-century issues like AI, data privacy, and social media.

“I was truly blown away by their poise, engagement, and ability to discuss tough topics with confidence,” said their teacher.

The experience made a strong impact on the girls. “Our daughter was so inspired by the experience that she stayed up late recounting every detail,” reported one parent. “It really pushed her to think critically, learn more about opposing viewpoints, and become a stronger debater.”

At Montrose, we are committed to forming informed citizens equipped to serve as confident leaders who engage the world to build bridges for the common good. Our Civics curriculum is centered on core texts underlying our democracy – and the principles and virtues essential to citizenship.

Montrose's commitment to 8th grade Civics provides the fulcrum for the 6-12th grade history curriculum. The rich liberal curriculum moves from a focus on world history and geography to focus on Western Civilization and the American polity in the context of broader cross-currents. The Civics curriculum is centered on core texts which illuminate both the constitutional elements that stabilize our democracy as well as the principles and virtues essential to citizenship.
