Drama | Arts | Montrose School | Medfield, MA

upper school and middle school programs

The Upper School Drama program at Montrose is an audition-based and student-centric program. Students are invited to engage in all aspects of performance production from acting to stage management and technical direction. Technical production (eg. sound, lights, costuming, etc.) is entirely student led and run. We aim to cultivate in our thespians the habits of courage, resilience, tenacity, responsibility.

The Middle School Drama program at Montrose is growth-based and student centric. All productions require students to audition, but all students who want to participate are able and have an opportunity to grow in their skills and take on leadership roles, particularly in the 8th grade. Middle school students are also invited to take part in technical theater under the leadership of upper school students.

COURSES

Upper School Electives

Technical Theater

In this class, we will cover all aspects of theater production, from lighting and sound design, to stage crew and directing.

Students will have opportunities to learn about all of the different roles on and off the stage, as well as assist in the school-wide productions, leading and teaching other girls about stage crew and tech crew.

Acting

This 1/4 credit, year-long course is for everyone—those new to theatre, long-time thespians, and anywhere in between.

Beginning each class with a foundational physical and vocal warm-up, students will learn and hone the fundamentals of interpersonal communication and its application onstage and beyond. As a studio class, students can expect to engage with one another through theatre games, scene and monologue work, and conversational analysis of others’ work—both peers and professionals. This is truly a learn-by-doing art form, and one that is based in understanding body language and relationships, along with the ability to recognize where another person is coming from. Moreover, students will push their personal boundaries while having fun.

Masterclasses

Students have the opportunity to extend their learning with an expert in the field in small- group settings for one- to two-hour courses, or masterclasses.

Previous masterclasses include:

  • Audition masterclass - run by upper schoolers for middle schoolers
