a unique Physical education curriculum

P.E. classes at Montrose aim at helping students grow in body, mind and spirit. P.E. classes are available to students in every grade.

6th & 7th Grades

Our middle school curriculum is unique in many ways. The middle school follows a sports-based curriculum while helping girls grow in habits of heart, mind and character.

In our 6th and 7th grade P.E. classes, girls are exposed to all the different sports offered at Montrose. By giving the girls instruction in a wide variety of sports, such as field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball lacrosse, they can grow and experience a sport they may not have tried before. We also include “life sports” like wiffle ball, floor hockey, badminton, pickleball and many other team building games and activities. After a few weeks of instruction, girls are ready to compete in P.E. We also nurture habits such as respect, tenacity, honesty and good sportsmanship in class.

Habits of Mind for P.E.

Attentiveness: I am present during learning and minimize distractions.

Tenacity: I embrace struggle and keep at it.

Humility: I admit what I don’t know.

Habits of Heart for P.E.

Empathy: I seek to understand the feelings and perspectives of others.

Compassion: I look for ways to serve those in need.

Respect: I know everyone I meet has dignity, and I treat them accordingly.

Gratitude: I look for the good in life and express appreciation.

Forgiveness: I know that we are all works in progress and have the capacity to grow and change.

Hope: I am anchored in a vision of how things could be and work toward that vision.

Habits of Character for P.E.

Courage: I do not let fear hold me back from developing my strengths, and making good choices.

Resilience: I understand that challenges are part of life, and I have tools to bounce back.

Honesty: I seek to know, understand, and communicate truth.

Good Judgment: I reflect on the situation and choose wisely.

Patience: I cultivate inner calm.

8th grade

In 8th grade, our sports-based curriculum shifts, and more time is spent playing the actual sport or game with less instruction. Again, habits of heart, mind and character are continually emphasized. Girls begin class by participating in team-building walks to get to know each other better.

9th grade

9th grade P.E. focuses on our “Fitness for Life” curriculum. A goal is having the girls become better friends in a non-academic setting through team-building walks and activities. The girls also play many cooperative games and sports for the first half of the year. All girls are required to complete a “fitness workout” project, complete with a playlist. For the second half of the year, the students take the lead, leading others in their own fitness workouts and choosing group activities.

Our program promotes lifelong fitness and good health, long after P.E. class ends.
