Archbishop Richard G. Henning Visits Montrose School
On Thursday, January 8, Montrose School welcomed Archbishop Richard G. Henning of the Archdiocese of Boston to campus.
Our girls celebrated his visit with a Red Key Tour, a beautiful performance by the Treblemakers, and a spiritual bouquet lovingly crafted and presented by our Grade 6 students. Archbishop Henning celebrated Mass for our community and shared a powerful homily on the Gospel of John and about drawing near to the heart of Christ.
“You are authentically living your mission,” Archbishop Henning said at the reception following Mass. “God’s blessings are already coming to you in this way.”
In her welcoming remarks, our Head of School, Mrs. Katie Elrod, gave a brief history of Montrose School’s founding and the Archdiocese of Boston, when Cardinal Madeiros blessed the original plans for the school.
“In 1978, a group of intrepid parents and educators dreamed of founding a school inspired by the charism of Opus Dei to help young women learn how to work well for the love of God and others,” Mrs. Elrod shared. “Our founders were grateful for Cardinal Maderios’ blessing which has enabled our school to serve almost 1,000 families in the archdiocese for almost 50 years.”
She called attention to the similarities between Archbishop Henning’s challenge in his coat of arms, “to put out into the deep” and the mission of Montrose.
“Our tagline – where girls are called to greatness – originates from Pope Benedict’s message to young people reminding them that, because each person is made in the image and likeness of God, we are all not called to comfort, but to greatness,” she said. “Our students learn at Montrose how to reflect deeply upon life's enduring questions, use their freedom wisely, and unify diverse groups for the common good.”
As a parting gift, Archbishop Henning blessed the plans for our Campus Renewal project and announced that our school would be given an additional day off during our academic year — to much rejoicing from our girls!
Thank you to the Archbishop for taking the time to get to know our students and minister to our community. God bless you and your leadership in the Archdiocese of Boston!
