This summer, Montrose physics teacher Allison Daubert spent a week at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada — home to some of the world's leading theoretical physicists.
What is an Institute for Theoretical Physics? As Mrs. Daubert puts it: "It's a place where you bring 250 of the world's best theoretical physicists and give them unlimited caffeine so they can tackle the biggest and hardest problems in physics."
Through the Einstein Plus program, Mrs. Daubert studied General Relativity, Dark Matter, and Particle Physics — and how to bring these ideas into the classroom. She heard from researchers like Freddy Cachazo (mathematical physics), Katie Mack (Hawking Chair in Cosmology, author of The End of Everything), and Gideon Koekoek (gravitational waves, Maastricht University).
"We learned about, and learned ways to teach about, General Relativity, Dark Matter, and Particle Physics," said Mrs. Daubert. "It broadened my perspective on physics as well as on the best ways to teach physics. Additionally, the chance to spend a week working closely with physics teachers from across the world was an incredible opportunity."
She added, "They even took all of us on a little field trip, in what might have been the nerdiest tour group to ever tour Niagara Falls and the Nikola Tesla Museum."
This is what it looks like when a teacher never stops being a scholar. At Montrose, Mrs. Daubert's passion for physics doesn't stay in a classroom over the summer — it grows, so our girls get the benefit of it all year.
