What do you love about teaching?
It's amazing seeing the upward spiral of clarity, competence, and confidence as students practice a skill. In my English classes, I see that as students learn to read more carefully, they can write more clearly. As they practice writing with more specificity and clarity, they have to think more critically, and their writing becomes more compelling. And then this spills over into how they approach other things -- movies, conversations with friends, and other opportunities they encounter.

I also love infecting students with excitement for big ideas, beauty, and care for others. Students in the humanities can become so much more human, and that's what I strive to help them do through the study of literature.

What are the benefits of an all girls education?
When I moved from co-ed to all-girls teaching, I was stunned at how much faster students learned and how much deeper our class conversations went. So much of the "static" is missing in an all-girls school. Students can focus on really learning.

What is your favorite Montrose tradition?
    The Christmas skits.

What’s a book that has influenced you?
Jane Eyre. Although it's a gothic novel that includes some romantic elements not likely to happen to me or my students, I relate to Jane's struggles and growth. Jane thinks deeply, loves loyally, and makes mistakes. She can be feisty and ferociously independent, and she is compassionately (some would say stupidly) committed and kind.

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you?
Ms. Frizzle was the ultimate Growth Mindset teacher long before the term "Growth Mindset" existed. She always tells her students (and I tell mine, too): "Take chances! Make mistakes! Get messy!"

Who is someone past or present you would love to have dinner with and why?
Jane Austen. She gets people deeply and effectively. I would love to talk with her and hear how she sees different situations and people. She's so clear-thinking and quick-witted. Although I'd be a little nervous about how she might skewer me, I would expect to laugh a lot and learn a lot!

What are some of your passions, hobbies or skills outside the classroom?
I love natural remedies/approaches to eating, exercising, and healing.
I studied ancient Greek in college.
I like adventures and figuring out creative solutions.

What parents are saying

"My daughter joined Montrose as a 9th grader, and I have never seen her happier or more excited about school. Even during the cold, dark days of winter, she never wants to miss a single day. We are not a Catholic family, yet she feels comfortable and at home at Montrose."
