Middle School Spelling Whizzes

9 compete in Montrose championship spelling bee, 1 advances to regionals.
During common homeroom on Friday, February 10, the entire student body gathered in the M&M Building to witness Montrose School’s third annual middle school, school-wide spelling bee and cheer on the competitors. After two rounds of competition and elimination, only three participants each from grades 6, 7 and 8 were eligible to compete for the Montrose spelling championship – Jaycie Zinsner ’18, Ciara Young ’18, Alex Rider ’18, Ariana Jackson ’17, Grace Stoddard ’17, Emma Schiller ’17, Molly Cahill ’16, Catherine Conroy ’16 and Emma Frank ’16.

Montrose’s middle-school competition is part of the National Scripps Spelling Bee Competition, which takes place annually. The school champion is eligible to participate in the regional bee on the south shore on March 5, 2012. The Montrose spelling bee is organized each year by middle school English teacher Mrs. Becky Roberts. Dean Ginnetty lent a hand as well by calling out the words in the championship round.

Students were given words such as extrapolate, hexameter, clemency and diminutive. The competition was fierce especially when it came down to the final two participants, Molly Cahill ’16 and Ariana Jackson ’17. They went eighteen rounds until Molly Cahill ’17 emerged as the Montrose School spelling champion – for the second year in a row – by correctly spelling the word miscellaneous. Molly will go on to compete at the regional bee on March 5.
