The Varsity Soccer team clinches an undefeated season before a spirited home crowd.
Cheered on by a huge crowd of Montrosians in kilts, the Montrose Varsity Soccer team yesterday swept to a 5-0 victory in the championship game of an undefeated season.
Montrose faced tough rival Brimmer and May, who had brought their own cheering section. The Mavericks had chances early in the game but were held scoreless for the first thirty minutes of the half, amid much physical play and noisy support from both teams’ fans.
The tide turned when striker Tara Sennott ’13 notched the first goal off a cross from midfielder Julia Gibson ’16. With that, Montrose seized control of the game. Tara scored again five minutes later off a rebounded shot by striker Catherine Conroy ’16, leading to a 2-0 score at halftime.
Brimmer and May came out determined in the second half, with threatening play by their attackers. Montrose defenders Sarah Gibson ’14 and Maddy Godshall ’13 did an excellent job containing the powerful attack, along with defenders Kathleen Lockhart ’13 and Megan St. Martin ‘14.
Midway through the second half, Olivia Aha ’14 played a quick restart off a free kick to Catherine, who collected the ball behind the defense and scored. Soon after, Olivia sealed Brimmer’s fate with two more quick goals, first landing a left footed strike, then scoring again off a beautiful through ball from Kathleen.
Montrose fans, family and friends rushed onto the field in jubilation when the game ended. The Mavericks won 5-0, ending the season at 17-0-1.
Montrose Coach Amy Aha was full of praise for every member of her team. “Outstanding outside midfield play came from talented freshment Rylee Booth ’16, Elizabeth Schickel ’16 and Marie Lacke ’16, along with Olivia Giannakopoulos ’14, Emily Driscoll ’14 and Jessie Marshall ’13,” she raved. “Sarah Morrill ’15 gave strong minutes at outside back. Captain Katherine Casey ‘13‘s dynamic play lifted the team, and goalkeeper Lauren Francis ’16 notched another shutout as she tended the Maverick net flawlessly. A final shout out goes to captain Scooter Irwin ’13 as she kept her team focused and spirited,” and to the phenomenal play of the six seniors: Katherine Casey ’13, Maddy Godshall ’13. MaryBeth “Scooter” Irwin ’13, Kathleen Lockhart ’13, Jessie Marshall ’13 and Tara Sennott ’13.
The team prepares now for its next challenge, the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council tournament.
