Katrin O'Grady '15 places second in Cross Country team's first trip to NEPSTA championships.
The Montrose Cross Country team had an outstanding trip to Millbrook, NY on November 10, where they competed successfully in the New England Preparatory School Track Association championships for the first time.
Over 500 runners participated in NEPSTA’s 3.1 mile race, a windy trail through forests and over hills. Runners came to championships from thirty different schools from all over New England and New York. The Montrose runners stood out not only for their strong showing in their first championships but also as the only runners in red uniforms.
Katrin O’Grady ’15, capping off an exceptional season, sped to the front of a large pack of girls racing through the woods. Coming out of the woods and into the fields leading to the finish line, Katrin ran neck and neck with a senior runner from Pingree School. Katrin finished barely three seconds behind the winner to take second place in the NEPSTA championships. She finished in 22:03, a blistering 7:06 minute mile pace.
Excellent races were notched by varsity runners MaryGrace King ’16, Dorothy Crevier ’14, Sarah Baker ’15, Emily Flynn ’14, Nellie Adams ’17 and Yuri Choi ’13. (Elena Oliva '14 could not compete.)
In addition, Kelsey Gallagher ’14, Monica Fernandez del Castillo ’14 and Charlotte Flatley ’16 all earned ribbons as junior varsity runners finishing in the top 19.
Athletic Director Jodi Blackburn congratulated Coach Becky Nielson and the entire team for their performance. “Most impressive was the way the girls handled their success,” she said. In particular, she praised Katrin’s sportsmanship during the final ceremony in which the top finishers were announced leading up to the winner. “Katrin, in second place, was the only runner who shook every girl’s hand and congratulated each one. It was pure Montrose!”
As a runner finishing in the top twenty, Katrin was invited to run in last weekend’s All Star race at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, where she finished fourteenth and ran a personal best time.
