Several Montrosians make an outstanding showing at the World Irish Dancing Championships.
Montrose students recently made an outstanding showing in the 43rd World Irish Dancing Championships. Saoirse Healy '16, Emma Schiller '17 and Colleen McCarthy '16 were members of the Junior Girls Ceili team that placed second in the world, while in the Minor Girls Ceili competition, Ciara Hernon '18 danced on the first place team and Ciara Young '18 on the second place team. In addition, Ceili McLaughlin '13 excelled in the Senior Girls Ceili competition.
The 43rd World Irish Dancing Competition, Oireachtas Rince Na Cruinne, took place at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, marking only the second time in history that this prestigious competition has been held outside Europe. For local Irish step dancers, this presented a rare opportunity to compete in their hometown.
For Saoirse, Emma and Colleen, the chance to dance together in the World Championships was especially meaningful as they have danced together since the age of five. Their Junior Girls Ceili team competed against 104 teams from all over the world. Over two challenging days, the field of teams slowly dwindled, leaving only the most elite dancers in the running. Their result, second place team in the world, came through hours of hard work and intensive practice.
In the Minor Girls Ceili competition, the younger Montrosians also met with outstanding success. Ciara Hernon's team placed first and Ciara Young's second in the world, in a field of 66 teams. Ciara Young was also part of a Minor Mixed Ceili team which took first place out of a field of fifteen teams. Both girls, along with Saoirse, Emma and Colleen, dance for the Harney Academy of Irish Dance.
Warmest congratulations to our superlative dancers on their achievements on the world stage!
