Where in the World?

Elizabeth Ling '18 wins the annual Middle School Geography Bee.
In the annual Middle School Geography Bee at Montrose, ten middle school students competed to identify rivers, oceans, islands and landmarks. Elizabeth Ling ’18 emerged as the victor in the tiebreaker round.

The Middle School Geography Bee, part of the National Geographic Bee sponsored every year by the National Geographic Society, is a nationwide competition for middle schools students to encourage the teaching and study of geography. Every middle school student at Montrose took a preliminary written test, provided by the National Geographic Society, to determine who would compete in the live contest.

When the tests were graded, the top scorers from each grade were chosen to advance to the final round: Elizabeth Ling ’18, Kira Dharni ’18, Alex Rider ’18, Clara Guzman ’19, Emma Dunnington ’19, Hannah Weis ’19, Tessa Mannix ’20, Mariah Morrill ’20, Sarah Ling ’20 and Anna Bachiochi ’20.

The ten girls took the stage in the M&M Building for the live competition. Assistant Head of School & Academic Dean Mrs. Katherine Ginnetty explained the instructions and read the increasingly challenging questions to the contestants. By the end of the fourth round’s question (“On what river is the Hoover Dam located?”), only two contestants remained, Elizabeth and Mariah.

As the two girls advanced to the championship round and then the tiebreaker round, the questions grew more and more difficult. Elizabeth finally won by correctly identifying Iceland’s largest city, Reykjavik. She now has the opportunity to take a written exam to determine if she can qualify for the state competition. State competition winners will be invited to National Geographic headquarters in May to compete for scholarship awards in the national finals.

Congratulations to all the participants, and good luck to Elizabeth in the next level of competition!
