Auction Magic for Montrose

Mediterranean Magic Dinner & Auction was an overwhelming success, netting more than $150,000 for Montrose.
Mediterranean Magic Dinner & Auction on March 15 was an overwhelming success, netting more than $150,000 for Montrose School. Auction proceeds, including a lively Raise the Paddle effort for a new sound system, directly benefit the Realizing the Dream Capital Campaign for the new Arts & Athletics Center.

Record attendance of nearly 300 people, lively bidding, enthusiastic student volunteers and original performances by the Upper School Chorus and Treblemakers led to a truly magical evening for all. The 28th annual Auction honored two outstanding educators, Mary Jane Rice and Karen Demirjian, who embody the Montrose mission of educating women of faith, character and vision for the past twenty years.

The Silent Auction included some of the best items in recent history, as evidenced by spirited bidding and record-breaking results. Following the Silent Auction, guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner while Chairman of the Board Neil Jacob provided an update on the Capital Campaign for the Arts & Athletics Center. "Our school has realized many dreams in its thirty-four year history, and we have much to be grateful for. I am happy to report that to date we have raised $6.3 million for the Arts & Athletics Center." Mr. Jacob then encouraged guests to "bid high," so that Montrose could reach its goal of $6.5 million to finish the A&A Center on time for a fall 2014 opening.

Following dinner, the Upper School Chorus' auction-themed medley of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, re-written for the occasion by honoree Mrs. Karen Demirjian, brought the entire room to its feet.

Head of School Karen Bohlin then payed tribute to the evening's honorees. "Students treasure Ms. Rice for her faith in them, for challenging them to ask the hard questions--Who am I? Why am I here?" she said of veteran advisor, English and theology teacher Mary Jane Rice. "And they leave her classroom with a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them." Of beloved Latin teacher and upper school music director Karen Demirjian, she noted, "Like a conductor who hears the subtleties of each section in the orchestra, this Maestra 'hears' the potential in each of her students, and draws it out."

When the Live Auction began, current parent Scott Wahle '16 and auctioneer Jim Wells got the crowd excited. Montrose parents, alumnae and friends did not disappoint, bidding enthusiastically for the fantastic items, including a Napa Valley wine tour, a New York City getaway, sunset cruises, and the uproariously popular "Bowling with Bohlin."

At the night's end, guests departed joyfully, grateful for a wonderful night of friendship and fun, and Montrose celebrated another successful auction - one of the best in history. The dedication and hard work of many volunteers helped Montrose to reach its 2014 Auction goals on many fronts. Hats off to the Core Team - Donna Fernandes, Kelli Fleming, Kelly Melley, Karen Noble, Wendy Miklus and Jennifer Schiller. Special thanks to the many volunteers including Committee Chairs - Coleen Noonan, Monika Weis, Lizzi McManmon and Lauren Marshall.
