Seniors bid farewell to Montrose as family, friends, alumnae and faculty celebrate them.
On Saturday, June 6, the Class of 2015 bid farewell to Montrose School. Family, friends, alumnae and faculty gathered in the Arts & Athletics Center to pay tribute to the members of the graduating class.
Head of School Dr. Karen Bohlin welcomed the audience, calling the graduates a force for good in the world as they answer the call to greatness. “Greatness comes not from asking ‘what does life has to offer me?’ but rather, ‘what is life asking of me right now, and how ought I respond?’ At Montrose, your daughters know they are called to greatness in faith, in character, in intellectual vision.”
Elle Schirripa ‘15 gave the Salutatorian Address, in which she exhorted her fellow graduates to imitate St. Therese of Lisieux. “To do ordinary things well for love of God is to live the Montrose mission in the truest way,” she said. “Our years at Montrose were about forging relationships, appreciating our many gifts, and sanctifying the ordinary. So as our time at Montrose comes to a close, may we continue to pursue the ‘little things,’ with courage, persistence, and an unwavering Montrose spirit.”
In her Valedictorian Address, Laura Bergemann ‘15 described the Montrose student’s journey in understanding the importance of knowledge. “At Montrose, you’re here to learn, but not just facts and dates and geography. You’re here to learn how to be a virtuous person. Here, the most precious thing is knowledge of the world and knowledge of the self.”
Boston College professor Dr. Kerry Cronin delivered the address to the graduates, relating an anecdote of her grandmother’s “emigrant wake,” in which her grandmother’s friends and family members stayed up all night singing with her the night before she left Ireland for America. She told the graduates, “Throughout your life, what will matter most is whether you have made yourself to be a woman who is moved to care and compassion and love, a woman who is moved to deeper understanding and greater charity, a woman who would stay up all night singing for the love of a friend or family, or even for a stranger or an enemy.”
According to Montrose tradition, Dr. Bohlin spoke personally about each graduate, relating anecdotes which revealed each girl’s strengths, accomplishments and character. The graduates, dressed in white and carrying red roses, cheered one another as each classmate rose to receive her diploma.
Congratulations and good luck to the Class of 2015!
