National Honor Society Inducts Eleven

Students are lauded for their scholarship, leadership, character and service.
Eleven new students were inducted into the DeTore Chapter of the National Honor Society at Montrose School recently. The seven juniors and four seniors were lauded for their scholarship, leadership, character and service in their high school careers.

Before the ceremony, NHS member Emma Frank ‘16 provided classical violin background music, and member Molly Cahill ’16 sang the National Anthem. The new members were then welcomed by NHS advisors Ms. Kate Cusack ’99 and Ms. Sarah Harper, who described the important service work performed by NHS members over the past year. NHS Officers Julia Gibson ‘16, Sylvia Conte ‘16, Megan Bellavance ‘16 and Colleen McCarthy ‘16 each spoke about the four attributes central to the mission and philosophy of the National Honor Society: Character, Leadership, Scholarship and Service.

Colleen, Officer of Service, told the new members,“I want to make sure service doesn't become just another activity on a long to-do list, but that it is viewed as a meaningful and fulfilling activity we can do everyday. There are countless opportunities to brighten the day of another, even if it is as small as a warm smile. Any action, no matter how big or small, can have an immeasurable effect on those around us.”

Megan, Officer of Scholarship, described the inspiring life of Noah Webster as an example of one dedicated to a life of scholarship. “Everyone here has a commitment and a value for education,” she told the new inductees. “You all are dedicated students who truly love to learn and take every opportunity to expand your knowledge and to help others expand theirs. Like Noah Webster, you will spread your love of learning by teaching others.”

The officers lit five candles - four white ones representing scholarship, leadership, character and service, and one yellow one representing the eternal light of knowledge. Each inductee then received a membership pin from the officers and a rose from one of the senior NHS members, then signed her name in the NHS membership register.
