Chemistry Competes in "Molympics"
In honor of Avogadro's number (6.022 x 10^23), students tackle challenges in an international competition on 10/23.
The sophomore Honors Chemistry students faced their tasks in teams of three, including the SophMoles, Molennium Falcon, and Molennials. They competed in five events, all involving calculations related to the mole and Avogadro's number (6.022 x 10^23). Events ranged from "Mole Flip" or flipping water bottles and calculating the total number of water molecules that they successfully flipped, to "Mole Tower" - building the tallest possible freestanding tower of #2 stoppers, measuring the height in centimeters and calculating the height of one mole of stoppers in meters.
The top teams' results will be submitted to the Molympics Planning Committee and judged against schools from around the world.
Sophomore chemistry students also created "Dr. Karen Mole-in" in honor of the head of school, featuring a sweater with a block M, a flag saying "#MoleNation" and "Where moles are called to greatness," and Dr. Bohlin's signature black boots.
